Home and Community Care

Certificate III in Home and Community Care

Workers in this occupational group work in the community under regular supervision within clearly defined organisational guidelines and service plans. These workers carry out activities related to the maintenance of an individual’s personal care and/or other activities of living. These workers report directly to a supervisor and are not responsible for other workers.
Workers at this level are required to have an understanding of Indigenous culture and history and to work with local communities in the provision of services.

15 units must be selected to successfully complete this qualification including 10 compulsory units and 5 elective units.

Compulsory

  • Provide care support, which is responsive to the specific nature of dementia
  • Orientation to aged care work 
  • Communicate appropriately with clients and colleagues
  • Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
  • Work effectively in a home and community care environment
  • Provide personal care in a HACC environment
  • Comply with information requirements of the aged care and community care sectors
  • Participate in safety procedures for direct care work
  • Facilitate co-operative behaviour
  • And choose either, Orientation to disability work, OR Provide care and support

Elective

  • Assist in the provision of an appropriate environment
  • Assist with self-medication
  • Support the older person to meet their emotional and psychosocial
  • Provide support to an older person
  • Provide personal care

Certificate III in Aged Care Work

Workers in this occupational group work primarily in residential facilities under direct or regular supervision within clearly defined organisational guidelines and service plans. These workers carry out activities related to the maintenance of an individual’s personal care and/or other activities of living. These workers report directly to a supervisor and are responsible for other workers.  Workers at this level are required to have an understanding of Indigenous culture and history and to work with local communities in the provision of services.

13 units must be selected to successfully complete this qualification including 9 compulsory units and 4 elective units.

Core

  • Provide support to an older person
  • Provide personal care
  • Orientation to aged care work
  • Support the older person to meet their emotional and psychological needs
  • Provide care support which is responsive to the specific nature of dementia
  • Communicate appropriately with clients and colleagues
  • Comply with information requirements of the aged care and community care sectors

  • Participate in the work environment

Electives – Personal Care Assistant

  • Assist in the provision of an appropriate environment
  • Assist with self-medication

  • Respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour
  • Support the older person to maintain their independence
  • Advocate for clients
  • Provide physical assistance with medication
  • Support group activities
  • Contribute to service delivery strategy
  • Prepare and maintain beds
  • Care for home environment of clients
  • Transport clients/ patients
  • Apply basic first aid
  • Work effectively in a cross-cultural content with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and organisations

  • Perform general housekeeping duties to maintain clean environment
  • Perform general cleaning tasks in a clinical setting
  • Handling waste in a healthcare environment

Electives – Laundry Staff Sample

  • Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
  • Contribute to service delivery strategy
  • Collect and maintain linen stocks at user-locations
  • Provide personal laundry service to clients, patients and others

Electives – Food Delivery Staff Sample

  • Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers
  • Contribute to service delivery strategy
  • Provide food services
  • Respond effectively to difficult or challenging behaviour

Electives – Maintenance Staff Sample
